Vocal workshops with Ánnámáret

Join us for unique workshops with the Finnish singer Ánnámáret, or Anna Näkkäläjärvi-Länsman. The artist will introduce us to the musical culture of her native Sámi community, the indigenous people of the Arctic. We are going to learn about the characteristics of joik, one of the earliest musical traditions still alive in Europe, which involves improvising short melodies following archaic five-tone scales. Bringing yodelling to mind, they are performed by one voice and without accompaniment, but in joiking it is not the show that counts, but the intimate relationship between the singer and the song. A joik − meaning a song − is often a gift from a parent or relative and accompanies a person throughout their life: both live that life together.

The workshops are intended for a wide audience, including both music and singing enthusiasts as well as beginners. This is an exceptional opportunity to immerse yourself in the sounds of the North and try joiking under the guidance of an experienced artist.
