8 Pipers for Philip Glass (France/Brittany)

Even when his music was already being played in prestigious concert halls, he would still work as a New York taxi driver and plumber. In his own words, he did not want his life to depend on the views of the critics. He would always go against the grain, while his style revolutionized contemporary music. Such was the father of musical minimalism, Philip Glass.

His work would inspire multiple artists, most of whom—like Glass himself—abandoned the beaten track to find new routes of exploring the world of sound. Erwan Keravec is undoubtedly one of them. After all, it was in the spirit of the minimalist aesthetic that the Breton instrumentalist, composer and improviser delved into the traditional music of his homeland. In the project titled 8 Pipers for Philip Glass, Keravec boldly reworks dance melodies from Brittany. Their novel interpretations are performed by eight instrumentalists on Breton shawms (bombards) and bagpipes of various sizes and origins, such as the archaic biniou bihan and the biniou bras, borrowed from Scotland.
